GPS Warning: Unless you want to spend an extra hour travelling scenic but very windy and hilly roads from Auckland please make sure your GPS route passes through Opua. Do not leave SH1 just past the Whakapara service station. Stay on the main road until the entrance to Kawakawa where you branch right to Opua and take the (continuous service) car ferry across to Okiato and the Russell peninsular.

The quickest route from the car ferry at Opua is Hope
Avenue, Florance Avenue, Pomare Road. The
quickest vehicle route from the township is Chapel St,
Ashby St, Hazard St, Gould St, Oneroa Rd.
